CALIFORNIA ELD STANDARDS-BASED CURRICULUM

Why Use Tools Aligned with California State ELD Standards?

"Language is the driver. Content is the passenger."

In Designated ELD instruction, language learning should take precedence over content knowledge and vocabulary.

That's because without a solid understanding of how English works and how it's applied, multilingual learners will struggle to achieve proficiency. Given that the Summative ELPAC is designed to assess language skills based on California ELD standards, it is not surprising that redesignation remains out of reach for so many students, even after years of instruction

When evaluating materials for your multilingual learners, the most important question to ask is: how well do these resources align with California English Language Development standards?

How We Connect to California ELD Standards

The Language Tree Online lesson modules follow the Universal Design for Learning and SDAIE frameworks. They provide flexibility in the ways that students can access, engage with, and demonstrate knowledge of materials. Our lessons and assessments cover the entire breadth and depth of the latest California ELD standards — including all the multiple language skills and functions for each standard.

The Importance of an Age and Level-Appropriate ELD Curriculum

Multilingual learners in the secondary grades are not the same as those in elementary. Teens and pre-teens have different experiences, background knowledge, and cultural references. Therefore, it's important to use resources that were designed for that age group.  Our standard-based ELD curriculum presents language lessons amidst the context of realistic peer-to-peer interactions and topics that are developmentally appropriate for middle and high school students.

Language Tree Online offers comprehensive programs and resources for grades 4-12 English learners that address language development expectations along the continuum of Novice/Newcomer to Emerging and Expanding levels.

  • Newcomers is designed for newly-arrived students as well students with ELPAC Proficiency Level 1 (Pre-Emerging/Emerging).
  • ELD1 is designed for ELPAC Proficiency Levels 1- 2 (Emerging/Early Expanding) English learners.
  • ELD2 is designed for ELPAC Proficiency Levels 3+ (Expanding/Early Bridging) English learners and long-term English learners (LTELs) who are on the cusp of re-designation

NEW: The Language Tree Performance Indicator

Our new Performance Indicator helps students and teachers prepare for the ELPAC.

What is Designated ELD ?

Watch David Noyes, Language Tree Online Head of Curriculum who is also a National Board-certified ELD educator, talk about:

  • What does “Designated ELD” mean, and why is this important?
  • How do the CA ELD standards fit into this instructional time
  • How the Language Tree Online program works with Designated ELD

I’ve had a lot of success with students on the ELPAC. Scores were going up or they were redesignating. And I think we are going to see even better results this year with the Language Tree Performance Indicator.
